October reading

Mt. Shasta from Mary's house, 2008

Merry Men by Carolyn Chute is on our reading list for October. With 695 pages, this book will carry us through November. We'll be meeting at Cathy's house on Thursday, Nov. 5th to discuss the first third of the book. As we read, it would be helpful to post your progress and comments here. So many ideas and insights occur as we read and this is a wonderful place to store them for our discussion.

If you keep an ongoing reading list (who doesn't?), add these to your list:

The Hemmings of Monticello by Annette Gordon-Reed
The Mysterious Life of the Heart-writings from The Sun magazine
The Maytrees by Annie Dillard
Netherland by Joseph O’Neill
Parallel Play by Tim Page
South of Broad by Pat Conroy (don't bother...)
A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle
Empire Falls by Richard Russo
My Life in France by Julia Child
Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder
Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris
French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork and Corkscrew by Peter Mayle

  1. Thanks for the list of books, Mary. While in France on our trip, I read a Peter Mayle book, French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork and Corkscrew, which was very entertaining, especially as I became more familiar with the food and the wine regions of France.

  2. I'll add this to our list above. Thanks for the recommendation.

  3. I am devouring this book! It's wonderful- quirky, engaging and so well written. I am wondering if one character will emerge as central?

I love your comments and enjoy the conversation that results.
